What does it mean to DREAM?

To me the word DREAM implies a sense of freedom and creativity. I decided to look up the definition in our big Webster’s Universal Unabridged Dictionary, published in 1996 by Random House. I found the definitions got richer and broader as I read them. Here are some ways it defined the word “DREAM”.  As a noun it is: – a succession of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep. – the sleeping state in which this occurs – an object seen in a dream – an involuntary vision occurring to a person when awake – a vision… Read More

Daring to Dream in 2012!

from my current art journal, Valerie Sjodin copyright 2012 This year I am choosing to act on my Dreams. Even seeing that in print sounds scary. I’ve been asking myself, “What if I dare to dream and then take action?” I have been reading the book Dreaming with God by Bill Johnson. It’s my second time through and this time my daughter and I are reading it and talking about it.It is excellent! Last week she said, “Mom, let’s write our dreams down and share them with each other.” She said it so enthusiastically that I didn’t say what first came… Read More

Open to Transforming Power

“Transformation” by Valerie Sjodin, acrylic & mixed media, Copyright 2011 This symbolic painting represents the transformative power of God at work in an open and willing heart.  You may notice the butterfly is very similar to my logo. A number of years ago I bought a chrysalis from a pet store and then I witnessed the process of  a creature emerging into its intended form. I chronicled the process with photographs and drawings, and have been using the drawings as symbols of transformation ever since.  Swirls and circles usually find their way into my artwork. Swirls represent to me: life… Read More

Supernatural Creativity

Last week I spent the week in Redding at the Supernatural Creativity Conference at Bethel Church. I am so thankful I went. It was life-changing, and I will share more about the experience in the blogs ahead. I came away with a greater awareness of how the creative arts bless people and how God can use artists for His glory and Kingdom. The speakers were fantastic as well as the worship music and dance. The workshops included a broad view of creative arts featuring culinary arts, drama, dance, painting, writing, music etc. I also left with a greater appreciation for… Read More

I want to be a Visionary

“Visionary” copyright Valerie Sjodin 2011     I’ve been wanting to combine the various ways I paint for some time now. During the past year and a half I have been making more visual journals instead of paintings. I’ve loved it as it allows me to explore all sorts of themes, text, and mixed media in a smaller, low-risk way. But I’ve also missed working on paintings. In addition, a number of people close to me have been encouraging me to paint people again. I used to draw and paint people back when the girls were young children, but then I… Read More
