Reframing & Restoring Joy
Reframe & Restore
In the USA we celebrate Thanksgiving the month of November, so it seems fitting to focus on gratefulness. The truth is, I need my joy to be restored. Like many, the last year and a half has brought many losses and our individual and collective worlds are not what they used to be. Sadness and even depression can weigh heavy on our hearts and daily lives. I sense the need to re-frame how I'm looking at life and focus on the positive. Being intentionally thankful and counting specific blessings is one way to restore joy, and there are more ways to help.
Ways to Restore Joy
In my quest for joy, I have compiled a list of ways to restore joy. Each day I am doing a few of the following:
Sometimes we just need some easy and practical ideas on how to restore joy. Here are some I've found and am being intentional to do. I'd love to know ways you've found that foster gratitude and bring joy.
Listen to uplifting music you enjoy
Sing and make music, especially songs of praise
When out and about, make eye contact with people, smiling, greeting them with kindness
Add movement by going for a walk or other exercise
Listen to or read a book or that gives you hope
Reserve time to spend with God without distractions
Read Scripture and write down verses that are encouraging to you
Make Scripture personal by rereading verses in the first person as a prayer out loud and/or write it down
Refuse to focus on the negative, especially hurts that have come from other people
Release hurts to God, trusting Him to take care of it
Write down blessings and thankfulness in your journal
Thank God for your blessings & what He has done
Write a note of thanks to someone who has blessed you
Connect with a friend whose company you enjoy
Run an errand for or reach out to someone in need
Give yourself permission to make something that brings you joy, and enjoy the process
Play like a child - and/or with a child

“Praise the Lord!
For he has heard my cry for mercy.
The Lord is my strength and shield.
I trust him with all my heart.
He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.
I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.”
